Oregon was a land claimed by France, Spain, Britain, Russia, Connecticut (Western Reserve), Native Americans, and perhaps several others. When the Louisiana Purchase transferred the land to the United States, Oregon was still disputed territory. The 1805-1806 Lewis & Clark Expedition reaching Oregon in the Pacific Northwest, cemented its ownership by the United States of America. Because of the wondrous descriptions of the Oregon Valley, Oregon was the main destination of settlers in their wagon trains from St. Louis until the California Gold Rush in 1849. Oregon became a state in 1859. |
