This is a general request, going out to people who work with Ada and are interested in developing open systems standards.

As many of you are aware, the IEEE Portable Applications Standards Committee (PASC) is working toward establishing a common set of interfaces for portable applications called the Portable Operating System Interface for Computer Environments (POSIX).

As part of this effort various groups under PASC are defining Ada bindings to Language Independent or C-based interface specifications.

There is currently a draft standard for a Language Independent Specification and C bindings to XTI and Sockets (POSIX 1003.1g).

In October 1994 we received approval from PASC to form a working group to define an Ada binding to XTI; in January 1995, we received approval for an Ada binding to Sockets. These interfaces will provide the same functionality as the C interfaces, but will incorporate encapsulation, information hiding, and other features available in Ada. The language conventions and style for Ada bindings have for the most part been worked out in previous PASC efforts (1003.5, 1003.5b, etc.).

All this by way of introduction. Now for the request.

We are looking for people who can participate in these working groups and help shape the standardization of these interfaces.

The IEEE PASC meets four times a year for a week each time. Both technical and administrative details are discussed and resolved at these meetings. In addition, members of a working group can meet, discuss and resolve issues either by email, phone, or even face-to-face meetings.

If you are interested in participating in the Ada binding to XTI or Sockets working groups, or becoming a member of the ballot groups for these standards, please contact:
