Invited Paper: The National Ignition Facility: Early Operational Experience with a Large Ada Control System

Robert W. Carey

Robert Carey is currently the Lead Software Architect of the Integrated Computer Control System (ICCS) for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Project at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Software construction is progressing using object oriented methodologies and tools for the specification, design, and development of a large scale control system to operate the NIF 192 beam laser consisting of approximately 60 thousand control points distributed over approximately 300 computers. The software architecture consists of a multi-tier client/server network with CORBA distributed objects in an Ada and Java application environment.

Mr. Carey has 24 years of software engineering experience with emphasis in control system and information system applications.

Carey received a MS in Computer Science from the University of California at Davis
